"Eagle in the Sky" is a story about an era of agony and victory and about generations of air fighters who etched a glorious chapter in the annals of air warfare and the Israeli Air Force – with incredible bravery, loyalty and professionalism, giving their hearts and souls and sometimes their lives, for a cause they believed in.
The eagle in the sky is Ran Ronen, one of the most decorated fighter pilots of the Israeli Air Force. In his 27 years of service he flew every fighter plane, participated as a pilot and commander in every war from the Sinai Campaign through the Six Days War to the Yom Kippur War, flew more than 350 combat missions and downed 7 enemy planes. Ronen is a natural fighter pilot, aviator and warrior.

Eagle in the Sky eBook Ran Ronen pekker Reviews

Among the autobiographies from retired Israeli fighter pilots, Eagle in the Sky has to rank as one of the most memorable, and most noteworthy. Ran Ronen was a legend in his own day, a man whom one of his subordinates once described as "the greatest squadron commander ever." He was the lead pilot for Israel's Mirage reconnaissance unit in the years leading up to the Six Day War, and was the commanding officer of the Bat Squadron throughout the Six Day War - the only squadron to come away from that war without a single pilot lost. Perhaps his greatest personal challenge came during the War of Attrition, however, when he was called upon to replace Shmuel Hetz as commanding officer of Israel's first Phantom squadron, after Hetz died in action. In the middle of a war, Ran Ronen had to restore the confidence and fighting spirit of a squadron that had lost a loved and respected leader, and had to simultaneously adapt to an airplane that he had never before flown into combat.

I actually knew of Ran Ronen from several other books on the Israeli Air Force, and was more than delighted to discover that he was finally publishing his life's memoirs. The stories of his eight-minute battle with a Jordanian Hunter in 1966 are the stuff of legend - the longest dogfight in IDF history.

What sticks out among Ran Ronen's many memorable tales is the confident, cool and assured nature of a man who knew what it was to have his engine die on him at 300-ft altitude. I have read the life stories of several Israeli pilots. Among them, Ran Ronen stands out as someone who lived to fly, someone for whom there could be no higher calling than that of a high performance jet, and to lead the men who flew them. For anyone who loves aviation history, his story will be a must-have addition to their library.
General Ronen shares experiences of his laudable career. General Ronen is a true warrior, and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all military aviation enthusiasts.
